Barbershop singing is a uniquely American art form rooted in the rich tradition of a cappella harmony. Its distinct style is characterized by four-part, unaccompanied vocal arrangements that create rich, ringing chords known as "lock and ring" harmony. In barbershop, each voice part has a unique role: the lead sings the melody, the tenor harmonizes above the melody, the bass provides the foundation with deep, resonant notes, and the baritone fills in the chords to create that unmistakable barbershop sound.
The origins of barbershop music date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when informal singing in barbershops, parlors, and street corners brought people together in harmony. This style celebrates not just the beauty of music but also the joy of community and connection. Singing barbershop is a team effort, where blending voices and building relationships are as important as mastering the music.
Sweet Adelines International, founded in 1945, brought barbershop harmony to women, creating a space where singers of all ages and backgrounds could share their love for music.
After World War II, barbershop singing was growing increasingly popular for men. In 1945, a small group of women wanted to participate in the chord-ringing, fun-filled harmony that the men were singing. So these women organized "Sweet Adelines in America." From its humble beginnings in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sweet Adelines International, as it is now called, has grown to a membership of almost 30,000 women in countries all across the globe.
Sweet Adelines groups, like the Buffalo Gateway Chorus, carry forward this vibrant tradition with a touch of glamour, dynamic choreography, and powerful emotional expression.
The Sweet Adelines style stays true to the principles of barbershop harmony while embracing creativity and innovation. Performances often feature a mix of traditional barbershop standards and contemporary songs arranged in the barbershop style. From heartfelt ballads to energetic uptunes, the music captures a spectrum of emotions that can move audiences to laughter, tears, and everything in between.
